Body Prayer Workshop

  • EcoVillage at Ithaca 100 Rachel Carson Way Ithaca, NY, 14850 United States (map)

Body Prayer is a form of contemplative movement expressing devotion and gratitude through simple and wisdom-filled body gestures. Body Prayer is derived from the therapeutic and artistic form of movement called Eurythmy introduced in 1912 by Rudolf Steiner, a German philosopher and scientist of mind and spirit. Body Prayer was additionally influenced by the work of Robert Powell, a student of Steiner’s, who developed a form of movement based on Eurythmy called Choreocosmos. Cynthia Hutchison developed Body Prayer for her personal spiritual practice after studying both Steiner’s and Powell’s work. Judeo-Christian in origin, it can be applied to all spiritual paths and religious backgrounds.

In this workshop, participants will learn the movements of three Body Prayers and their meanings. No dance experience is necessary; however, it is helpful if participants have good balance and moderate exercise ability. For those who are challenged with balance or gait, you are welcome to attend and receive benefits from doing the movements in a chair. Please wear comfortable, loose clothing.
